About TechLift

A student-led nonprofit on a mission to expand access to computer science education in underserved communities.

Our Mission

TechLift is a student-led nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to computer science education and technology opportunities in underserved communities. Through partnerships with libraries, community centers, and schools, we provide free coding classes, workshops, hackathons, and other STEM programs that help students develop valuable technical and problem-solving skills.

Our flagship program offers free JavaScript coding classes through the Code.org curriculum, taught by trained student instructors. As we grow, we aim to expand into additional areas of technology education and create more opportunities for students to explore STEM careers.

TechLift also provides meaningful volunteer and leadership opportunities for students. Volunteers can earn community service hours while gaining real-world experience in teaching, curriculum development, event planning, fundraising, outreach, nonprofit management, and leadership.

By empowering students as both learners and leaders, TechLift works to bridge the digital divide and create a future where every student has access to the technology education and opportunities they deserve.

This is TechLift's only open volunteer role right now. We are actively recruiting volunteer instructors to teach free coding classes to students in underserved communities.

Expectations

What We Expect From cabinet Members

Show Up for the Team

TechLift depends on you to be there. We expect all interns to show up reliably and give their full effort on every project.

Time Commitment

Instructors are expected to teach their assigned class sessions and attend any brief training beforehand. Specific hours depend on the class schedule.

Complete Training

All volunteer instructors must complete TechLift's onboarding before starting. Training is brief, structured, and fully provided by TechLift at no cost.

Volunteer Instructor FAQ

Do I need teaching or coding experience to apply?
Coding experience is helpful but not required. TechLift provides all volunteer instructors with thorough onboarding, curriculum materials, and clear instructions before you start. If you are willing to learn and show up for the team, we will make sure you are prepared to contribute.
What will I actually be doing?
Volunteer instructors teach free JavaScript coding classes using the Code.org curriculum and support students during sessions at libraries and community centers. All lesson materials and guidelines are provided by TechLift - you do not need to build a curriculum from scratch.
How much time does volunteering take?
Time commitment depends on the class schedule at your assigned location. You will need to attend your scheduled sessions plus a brief onboarding at the start. We work with your availability and try to make the schedule as flexible as possible.
Will I get community service hours?
Yes! TechLift tracks and verifies community service hours for all volunteers. Your hours can be used for school requirements, scholarship applications, college applications, and any other purpose that requires documented service hours.
Is this a remote or in-person role?
Volunteer instructor work is in-person at your assigned library or community center, with occasional coordination with the Director of Instructors and the rest of the cabinet. Specific details will be shared after you are accepted.
